A Bu Pup-approved guide to trails with views, vibes, and wagging tails
If you live near Malibu, Santa Monica, or the Palisades, you already know: this coastline was made for adventure. And if you have a dog? Even better.
As someone who believes every pup deserves their best coastal life, I’ve rounded up the best dog-friendly hikes in the Malibu and Santa Monica Mountains region — categorized by difficulty so you can match the trail to your dog’s energy level.
Let’s get into it.
Light & Easy Hikes (Perfect for Casual Adventure Pups)
These trails are ideal for puppies, senior dogs, or slower-paced scenic strolls.
Solstice Canyon (Malibu)
A classic Malibu trail with a mellow incline and beautiful canyon views. There are shaded sections, ruins to explore, and a peaceful, coastal feel.
Why it’s great for dogs:
Mostly gradual terrain
Shorter route options
Great first Malibu hike
Will Rogers – Inspiration Loop (Pacific Palisades)
A moderate-but-manageable loop inside Will Rogers State Historic Park. This is one of the few trails in the park where dogs are allowed, so stick to the Inspiration Loop specifically.
Why it’s great for dogs:
Clear trail structure
Nice elevation without being overwhelming
Great ocean views at the top
Los Leones Day Use Trail
This is one of the few dog-allowed options in the Topanga/Palisades area. Keep in mind dogs are only permitted on the Day Use Trail section.
Why it’s great for dogs:
Convenient location
Short and sweet
Wide fire-road style trail
Moderate Hikes (For the Active Coastal Pup)
These are perfect for dogs who love a bit of elevation and don’t mind putting in some miles.
Escondido Falls (Malibu)
A popular out-and-back trail that leads to a seasonal waterfall. It can get busy, but it’s worth it for the payoff.
What to know:
Some rocky sections
Limited shade
Best done early morning
Charmlee Wilderness Park
A hidden gem with rolling hills and gorgeous ocean views. You can choose shorter loops or go longer depending on your pup’s stamina.
Why we love it:
Wide open views
Multiple trail options
Feels peaceful and scenic
Zuma Canyon (Shorter Routes)
Zuma Canyon offers flexible hiking distances. Stick to shorter out-and-back options if your dog is moderately active.
Note: It can get very hot. Bring water. Start early.
Slightly Advanced (For Athletic Adventure Dogs)
These hikes are longer, steeper, and more exposed. Best for well-conditioned dogs used to elevation and distance.
Mishe Mokwa to Sandstone Peak
One of the most iconic hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. Stunning views, rocky terrain, and a real workout.
Be prepared for:
Rough footing
Longer mileage
Big elevation gains
Zuma Canyon Loop (Full Loop)
If you commit to the full loop, it becomes a serious hike. Gorgeous, but exposed.
Important Tips for Hiking in Malibu with Dogs
Before you grab the leash and head out:
Watch for rattlesnakes — they are active in warmer months
Start early — heat exposure rises quickly
Bring more water than you think you need
Keep dogs leashed — many areas require it and wildlife is present
What Makes a Bu Pup?
A Bu Pup is a dog living their best life by the coast — sun on their back, paws on the trail, ears in the wind.
These hikes aren’t just exercise. They’re bonding time. They’re confidence-builders. They’re memories.
Whether you’re taking your pup for a light canyon stroll or a full mountain climb, Malibu offers some of the most beautiful dog-friendly trails in Southern California.
